Durban ships agent Sturrock Shipping and supply chain manager Olam International recently sponsored a tour of the cargo ship Salon for the 26 pupils studying Maritime Economics at New Forest High School. New Forest High School is one of only three schools in SA that offers the maritime economics course as a subject. It was introduced to pupils in Grade 10. In addition to Maritime Economics, pupils also get the opportunity to do the internationally recognised Understand Shipping Certificate Course, available through the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. "Ever since the subject was introduced, many of the pupils have left school and gone straight into the shipping industry locally and internationally. From the feedback we receive from companies who employ our pupils and tertiary institutions who enroll our pupils, we are proud to learn that they are far ahead of the rest of the candidates they receive", said Shaun Coleman, Marine Manager with Sturrock. He said the school's Maritime Economics department would never survive without the consistent support it received from the different institutions that make financial donations, donate course material, or provide work experience.
