Sturrock Shipping was founded in 1969 as both a ships agency
and clearing & forwarding company in order to provide a full
supply-chain service for the handling of sea transport and the
import and export of goods into and out of South Africa.
In 1994, after the opening up of South Africa, the company began
a methodical expansion into Sub-Saharan Africa. In a little over 10
years Sturrock Shipping would become one of the largest, privately
owned shipping and logistics companies in South and East
Africa.
Expansion began with the English speaking countries of Kenya and
Tanzania, followed by Mozambique, Madagascar and even North
Sudan.
The company concluded an empowerment deal with the Calulo
Group in 2007, in terms of which Calulo Services acquired
a major shareholding in the company along with the Sturrock
family.
In 2010 the company acquired the businesses of two successful
ships agencies based in Australia, Hetherington
Kingsbury and the McArthur Shipping & Agency
Co, thereby firmly establishing Sturrock Shipping outside
of Africa. Further expansion took place into West Africa with
presence in both Angola and Ghana today.
In 2012 Sturrock Shipping announced its merger with
Grindrod Ships Agencies that encompasses several
distinguished brands allowing the group to offer services across
the dry and wet bulk as well as liner agency spectrum. This new
agency grouping has diversity in a wide spectrum of marine services
on offer, geographic spread as well as many decades of experience
providing shipowners and operators a first class service.
Our base of Principal's and clients extends across the world many
of whom have been served by the group for 30 years and in some
cases considerably more. We pride ourselves on having been able to
offer longevity of service as well as ongoing reliability.
Sturrock Shipping has had an ISO 9001 quality management system in
place since 1996 and currently operates on a Level 3 empowerment
scorecard.
This merger follows on from the successful acquisition by
Sturrock Shipping and Calulo of a
15% shareholding in Röhlig-Grindrod (Pty) Ltd.
